The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in utilizing replay systems.
Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships this year.
Athletes will gain the ability to question particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.
The new system is slated for use on the main stadium and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four show courts when they are hosting singles contests.
This development comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.
Reviewable Decisions
Players cannot to challenge the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:
- If a ball has bounced twice.
- If a ball touched an opponent's racquet or body during play.
- Possible hindrance at the conclusion of a point.
Notably, there will be no cap on the number of challenges a player can ask for.
Case in Point
A recent incident took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.
Draper conceded it was a tough call for the umpire, but believed his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."
The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, awarding the point to Medvedev.
Growing Trend
Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Aussie Open this year.
Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the ATP circuit will have the system in place at every one of its tournaments.
Other Changes
A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.
This solves situations where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was in or out.
In other news, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
